On January 25, 2023, the law firm of Snable Stevenson & Silva filed suit on behalf of several residents of St. Clair County, Alabama, in response to a local landfill fire that has been burning for over 50 days.

The fire, that began on the land owned by Environment Landfill Inc. in Moody, Alabama, is not an isolated incident - the Alabama Department of Environmental Management has been receiving complaints as far back as 2013 as to the conditions of the landfill. Many of these instances dealt with unauthorized materials being dumped by unidentified parties, such as construction and demolition waste, appliances, and scrap tires.

According to the lawsuit, the landfill was first considered to be a fire hazard by ADEM in July 2017 after petroleum was found in the soil during an inspection. Since that date, the site was continually considered a fire hazard, but continued to remain open despite the complaints and inspections.

The fire that is currently burning was discovered around November 25, 2022. Due to the volume of smoke that has contaminated the air, residents have begun to experience health problems such as pain in their eyes and throat, along with complications from existing medical conditions. Locals also have had to invest in various resources in an attempt to reduce the amount of contamination in their homes and offices.



Through this lawsuit, Snable Stevenson & Silva hopes to bring awareness to the ongoing environmental concerns stemming from the landfill, as well as represent the people living in the hazardous conditions resulting from the ongoing fire.
